A Guide to the Most Tantalizing New Restaurants of the Season

One of the hottest new spots is Bar Volpe, by Karen Akunowicz from “Top Chef All Stars”. It is a short trot from the James Beard Award winner’s other South Boston restaurant, Fox & the Knife. Both serve Italian cuisine; While the culinary heart of the Fox & the Knife in Modena is in the north, the focus in the Bar Volpe is on southern Italy. Come here to see the pasta, then try the Curgiones, stuffed Sardinian pasta with potatoes, goat cheese, and tomato sauce. Spaghetti al lime with crabs; Ravioli with stuffed eggplant; and more. Of course there is more to life than pasta – like marinated mozzarella, roast chicken with black truffles and kale, fish dishes from the wood-fired oven, Negronis galore and a selection of wines from Kristie Weiss (Nathalie). Be prepared for a wait: reports said there was a line around the block to get in on opening day.

Japan is also in the culinary spotlight. Menya Jiro, a ramen chain founded in Kagoshima with outposts in Brooklyn, settles here. Noodle soups such as the jumbo “Jiro Monster” are available in Harvard Square, and further branches are planned for Seaport and Legacy Place in Dedham. In the food hall Hub Hall in the city center – opened in September and with dishes such as APIZZA by MIDA, Cusser’s, GreCo and Lily P’s Fried Chicken – there is a new addition: Momosan ramen, by “Iron Chef” star and restaurateur Masaharu Morimoto. The menu includes half a dozen variations of ramen, Peking duck with tortillas and sauces, tuna sashimi pizza, sushi and everything that is grilled and skewered. Malden is the home of the newcomers Omori Izakaya & Sushi, an offshoot of Brooklines Omori Izakaya. Come here for yakitori, donburi, a wide variety of sushi rolls and more.

I expect the most Judy’s Bay, a “New England Izakaya” who takes over the management of the cozy space that has long been Bondir. It comes from Lukas Dow and Kim Vo, spouses and hosts of a number of Asian-inspired barbecue pop-ups that have been running since 2018. Dow, who has worked at restaurants such as Cafe Sushi, L’Espalier, and Mei Mei, will take on the chef’s duties; He is also a hip-hop artist and co-founder of the non-profit Cambridge Hip-Hop Collective. Vo, a career coach and negotiation advisor, oversees the business side. The menu will highlight fresh seafood, Japanese-inspired dishes, and the drinks that are fundamental to the izakaya experience. The restaurant is due to open soon and is named after Dow’s grandmother, Judy. She and her husband Anthony ran the Wah May restaurant in Fairhaven for 30 years.

French tariff gets a new outpost in the seaport Coquette, at the Omni Boston Hotel. It’s from the people behind stylish eateries like Lolita, Mariel, Ruka and Yvonne. See and be seen as you sample seafood towers, duck confit flatbreads, Provencal spinach dumplings, and beef cheeks, and sip martinis. When you’ve gotten enough of the flirty French beach vacation vibes, head to Back Bay for some city energy Café Sauvage. The neighborhood bistro run by the wife-husband team Anais and Antoine Lambert presents multicultural Paris with a menu that includes banh mi and injera crepes alongside onion soup and steak fries. It is open for breakfast, lunch, and brunch in addition to dinner. The couple has worked in places like Colette and Frenchie; Chef Kendall DaCosta was at the Bastille Kitchen.

Beacon Hill will also have a new neighborhood point, 1928 Beacon Hill, in the long-standing Lala Rokh room. The chef is Dante Funes, formerly of Masa, Ghost Pepper, Southern Proper and more.

The plant-based food scene continues to grow. Mother and daughter Sahar Ahmed and Dina Fahim started Koshari mom at farmers markets in Massachusetts, then operated as a pop-up at Bow Market. Now it’s a restaurant in Somerville that specializes in vegan Egyptian street food – especially the eponymous dish, koshari, a mix of rice, lentils, noodles, chickpeas and fried onions. Order it mild, burning or in between with a sauce of your choice. Eggplant rice bowls, mushroom shwarma, falafel and various dips are also on the menu. (Another Egyptian restaurant, Kushari & Grill, also opened in Medford, with meat on the menu.) Chef Mary Dumont (Cultivar, Harvest) opened in Kendall Square PlantPub with partner Pat McAuley, who was behind the Rewild plant-based beer hall in Quincy. PlantPub takes over Rewild’s baton and serves craft beer and plant-based pub fare. Think buffalo cauliflower, loaded nachos, burgers, pizza, and soft ice cream.

Another new attraction for beer freaks: Castle Island Brewing Co. now has a taproom in South Boston that serves all beer along with food from Bardo’s Bar Pizza (there are salads, sandwiches and wings in addition to South Shore style bar pies). A taproom comes out in Hyde Park Roundhead Brewing Co., the first Latino-owned brewery in Massachusetts. It was founded by chief brewers Luis Espinoza and Craig Panzer, who met through their children’s soccer league. In the meantime, try the wares at the Aji Seco outdoor beer garden on November 12th and 19th Drifter’s Talewho has taken over the room.

And now for dessert. In awe Beyrut espresso serves Lebanese and other baked goods, coffee, and more. From the Kimchipapi Kitchen team, Pon de Joy has mochi donuts for you at Super 88 Market in Allston. and Plus petals is a magical unicorn of joy: a cellphone-free wine and dessert bar where you can nibble on cheese boards and Sachertorte while toasting the lack of equipment. In the former City Girl Cafe it is owned by the owners of the Somerville candy shop gâté comme des filles and the specialty shop Picnic & Pantry.

I see you there In the meantime, there are a few more places to look forward to: Comfort kitchen, the Uphams Corner, which is currently in pop-up mode in Jamaica Plain; Dear Annie, serves natural wine and sustainable food in Cambridge, from the folks behind Field & Vine and Rebel Rebel; the Port in the brewery, a collaboration between the Scottish tavern The Haven and the former Bella Luna, in JP; Nash Bar in the Theater District, where Nashville-inspired food and maybe line dancing are served in the former Abby Lane room; and Wusong Street, serves American-style Chinese food and tiki drinks in Harvard Square, which was Les Sablons, by Executive Chef Jason Doo (Menton) and business associate Thomas Brush (Felipes Taqueria).
