It’s a big day for rematches at the Beijing Olympics: the United States meets Finland in women’s hockey and Max Parrot takes on Mark McMorris in snowboarding.
USA beat Finland 5-2 to start the tournament and the teams will meet again in the semifinals, live on USA Network Monday at 8:00am EST. Parrot beat McMorris in slopestyle – McMorris objected to the scoring – and now they’re competing again in the air. NBC plans to air this final live during its late-night coverage.
During prime time, NBC will broadcast the women’s downhill live in what could be quite the comeback story for Italy’s defending champion Sofia Goggia. The freestyle ski slopestyle event with Eileen Gu was also postponed due to the weather. The final will now be streamed live on USA Network on Monday night.
Here are some things to check out (all times Eastern):
It was a slow start for Finland in the women’s ice hockey tournament. The 2018 bronze medalists had to open against the USA and Canada, losing those games by a combined 16-3. The Finns then lost to Switzerland.
But now they are through to the semi-finals after beating Japan 7-1.
Although USA Network will broadcast the second leg between USA and Finland live, it will also be broadcast on the same channel at 15:00
Gu is an American by birth and competes for China, where her mother is from. She has become one of the stars of the Beijing Games and has already won gold in the air.
Qualifying for their postponed slopestyle event will be broadcast on NBC this afternoon. The first run of the final is scheduled for 8:30 p.m. USA Network will broadcast the finale live, and NBC plans to show it during its late-night slot.
After Parrot took gold in slopestyle, McMorris said: “Obviously it would have been nice to have a different color medal. But to know that I kind of had the run of the day and had one of the best laps of my life and the whole industry knows what happened – pretty, pretty crazy.”
McMorris later apologized to Parrot, who said it was no big deal. The two both compete for Canada.
USA Network plans to air the men’s Big Air qualifier between 5:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. NBC will broadcast the finale live during late-night coverage.
NBC will also broadcast live coverage of the women’s Big Air finals during prime time.
Mikaela Shiffrin is still looking for her first medal at these games. The downhill is by no means the American star’s strongest event when she ends up racing there.
Goggia is coming off a pre-Olympic fall that left her with a sprained left knee, a partially torn cruciate ligament, a fractured fibula in her leg and some tendon damage. She still made it to the Beijing Games and took part in downhill training.
“The Olympics are everything to me, the place you want to be to fulfill your childhood dream,” said Goggia. “There is no place I would rather be than here. I don’t care about my condition.”
NBC plans to show the men’s team ski jumping event on the large hill in the afternoon. … The women’s freestyle aerials will be broadcast live on USA Network in the early morning, with an additional presentation on NBC in prime time. … USA Network will broadcast the men’s and women’s speed skating team pursuit finals live as part of its late-night coverage.
