Shortly after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced plans to fully reopen the economy, a group of scholars said opening the UK posed a threat to the world.
Experts fear that if society is fully opened up, there is a possibility that variants that are resistant could cause a further increase in Covid cases worldwide.

Great Britain is a global transport hub, especially in Europe. So if a new variant is found in the UK, it could easily spread around the world, scientists warned at an emergency summit.
Nearly 1,200 scientists signed a letter to the Lancet-Journal claiming that the strategy proposed by John’s team on Downing Street posed a threat that vaccine-resistant variants could develop faster.
Government advisors from Israel, Italy and New Zealand were among the few experts who warned the Johnson administration about reopening the economy.

“In New Zealand, we’ve always looked to the UK for scientific expertise, which is why it’s so remarkable that it doesn’t even follow basic public health principles,” said Michael Baker, professor of public health at the University of Otago.
The World Health Organization (WHO) senior advisor, Prof. JosÃ© Martin-Moreno of the University of Valencia, asked the UK government about its decision to reopen, despite thousands having lost their lives to the coronavirus pandemic.
“We cannot understand why this is happening in spite of your scientific knowledge,” he asked.
