JAKARTA: Number one in the badminton world rankings Viktor Axelsen got closer to a second trophy at three consecutive events in Indonesia on Saturday after securing a ticket for the final of the World Tour Finals.
The Olympic gold medalist, who won the men’s singles Indonesia Open last week, dominated both sets before easily beating Indian Lakshya Sen in a game of 21:13, 21:11 that lasted 39 minutes .
The Dane will face Thailand’s unset Kunlavut Vitidsarn, who beat Malaysia’s rising star Lee Zii Jia in a two-set match 21:18, 21:18 in Saturday’s semi-finals.
In the women’s singles, South Korean An Se Young also secured a ticket for the finals after beating Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong 25-23, 21-17.
The ticket paved the way for An to possibly win her third trophy in consecutive tournaments, having previously won the Indonesia Masters and Indonesia Open titles.
The 22-year-old An will play in the final on Sunday against Pusarla Venkata Sindhu from India. She said she had no special preparation for tomorrow’s game.
“I have to be ready for the final tomorrow because An is a player who is hard to beat,” she said after the game.
Sindhu secured the last ticket after winning a rubber set match against world number three Akane Yamaguchi from Japan on Saturday with 21-15, 15-21, 21-19.
The World Tour Finals, which are returning to Asia for the first time in 10 months, are the end of the season of three consecutive tournaments which, due to Covid-19, will be held under strict bio-safe conditions and without spectators on the Indonesian holiday island of Bali.
