The Elon volleyball team made their way to Italy to learn more about modern Italian culture and the differences between major volleyball-playing nations around the world. The Phoenix will also face off against club sides Liberte Forti Firenze and ASD Castelfranco de Sotto during his visit.

As part of Elon University’s ongoing commitment to providing its students with a global education, the Elon volleyball team will travel to Italy March 12-20 to explore and learn about modern Italian culture and the differences between the US, Italy and other greats Investigate volleyball teams. Play nations around the world.

“This trip comes at the perfect time,” said head coach Mary Tendler. “It will allow us to be together outside of the gym. We haven’t been able to do that so well in recent years due to the pandemic guidelines. In addition, our two new assistants, Tim Ebbecke and Willie Whealan, can get used to the team more quickly. Our team chemistry will be strengthened, which will benefit us for many years to come.”

During the week the team will visit Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome. Along the way, the team will visit Venice and Florence, learn how to cook pasta in Lucca, explore the tiny villages that make up the five ‘Cinque Terre’ countries, see the Vatican Museums, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter’s Basilica and take a guided tour through Rome.

Elon will also play matches against club sides Liberte Forti Firenze and ASD Castelfranco de Sotto and host a youth clinic in Ladispoli.

“The pre-departure classes were great,” said Tendler. “DR. Chris Leupold helped the players understand the culture in Italy while also engaging with our team culture. Two Elon students from Italy, Francesca Conte and Giulia Galvani, taught our players and staff some Italian and talked about the differences in the two countries. We’ve already learned so much and haven’t even left campus yet. We can’t wait to be challenged by a couple of Italian teams to engage with young volleyball players while we’re running a clinic, some incredible places to see and immerse yourself in the culture of another country.”

The trip marks the third European trip for the Elon volleyball team. The team traveled to Italy in March 2018 and also to Italy and Switzerland in March 2013.

“We are all so happy and grateful to be able to take a trip like this together,” Tendler concluded. “We look forward to representing Elon University in this amazing country!”
