Fine art photographer Gray Malin’s new series takes you on a breathtaking island-hopping tour of three Four Seasons Hawaiian oases.
Malin is known for aerial beach shots, which he captures while flying in a doorless helicopter. Malin has captured scenes like the Four Seasons Resort Oahu on Ko Olina’s crescent-shaped lagoon with white umbrellas, the Four Seasons Resort Maui on Wailea’s expansive saltwater fountain pool, and the newly renovated Four Seasons Resort Hualalais’ distinctive black lava rock coastline over on the Big Island .
As part of the Gray Malin x Four Seasons Resorts Hawaii collaboration, each beachfront oasis also offers special on-property amenities — from trays featuring images from the collection to a tropical Gray Malin Kokomo cocktail made with local coconut, lime, and mint — and sells its own works in his shops.
Today, for you to experience in person, Malin and the three resorts are hosting a social media giveaway, giving one winner an epic two-night Hawaii vacation at any Four Seasons; a large, framed piece from the collection; and a book signed by Malin. To enter, visit @GrayMalin @FSHualalai, @FSMaui and @FSOahu on Instagram.
Forbes Travel Guide spoke to Malin about the collection, his favorite Hawaiian beaches and why he keeps coming back to the islands.
Why is Hawaii a special place for you?
For me personally, Hawaii is a retreat. I visit them as often as I can to breathe the fresh air, recharge and reconnect. My work is designed to inspire joy and I often photograph places that make you want to escape – my brand slogan is ‘Make every day a getaway’. There’s no place like Hawaii that truly embodies that spirit.
Also, my family and I have spent the last two years at Christmas in Hawaii on the Big Island and I couldn’t think of a more scenic and memorable vacation. We created incredible memories on the Big Island together.
How often do you visit us?
I grew up on Kauai with my family and have been able to visit the different Hawaiian Islands at least 20 times since then. More recently, in 2020 and 2021, I spent months there working remotely with my husband and children.
What were you trying to capture for each object?
It was important to me to capture the allure of each resort as well as the iconic places guests remember from the time they stayed at the properties, such as: B. the swimming pool or the beach.
In general, my work has always focused on translating the spirit of travel and adventure through photography, creating memorable moments and bringing people together – and my collection with Four Seasons Resorts Hawaii reflects this mindset.
What experiences can guests expect at each Four Seasons resort?
With the launch of my partnership, guests can now enjoy Gray Malin’s immersive experiences across the three properties. These include a signature Gray Malin Kokomo cocktail, available to enjoy poolside at any hotel, as well as my latest Coffee Table Book. Gray Malin: The Essential Collectionin all hotel suites.
At Four Seasons Hualalai, I’m thrilled that my decorative trays and outdoor cushions featuring my photographs are now featured on all the chairs and tables around the popular Beach Tree swimming pool.
At the Four Seasons Maui at Wailea, I designed four of the luxurious cabanas by the Serenity Pool so you can step into a Gray Malin photo. Each cabana features my signature aerial photographs taken over the resort, along with my outdoor cushions, decorative trays, and my board games.
Similarly, if you visit Four Seasons Oahu in Ko Olina, you’ll find two luxurious poolside cabanas decorated with my beach photos taken above the resort and a collection of fun Gray Malin products inside. Additionally, the walls of the penthouse suite are adorned with a curated display of my artwork of Ko Olina and Gray Malin products throughout the suite, creating a colorful and playful vibe.
All of these activations create an opportunity for guests to interact with my brand in unexpected and exciting ways that go beyond just looking at my photography!
What activities do you enjoy doing when you are in Hawaii?
I love getting up early to see the sunrise, going to the beach in the morning, snorkeling in the afternoon and taking a sunset cruise in the evening.
If you’re traveling in the winter months, I highly recommend going out on a whale-watching boat.
What are your favorite beaches in Hawaii?
My favorite beaches on the Hawaiian Islands are Hanalei Bay on Kauai, Lanikai Beach on Oahu, Makena Beach on Maui, and Mauna Kea Beach on Hawaii.
Do you have a favorite island?
When I was younger my favorite island was Kauai, but now it’s Big Island. And who knows what it will be in the future! Each island offers unique experiences and amazing places to discover.
Are there places in Hawaii you still want to explore?
I want to photograph the island of Lanai from the air and make it to Molokai one day!
