Innovative teaching methods for the doctors of tomorrow

Even at a young age, Sakshi Watarkar had many interests – a love of languages (she speaks six!), An interest in medicine and a longing to study abroad in Europe. When it came time to explore universities to study medicine, she turned to Italy. “The country has always been a cradle of ancient medicine and a development center for modern healthcare and related technologies,” she says.

Once she had the opportunity to meet some of of the Humanitas University There was no turning back (Hunimed) representatives in their native India who answered all their questions. She knew it was the right medical school for her.

“The university offers a high quality level of education integrated with theory, lectures, simulation sessions, and hands-on handling of real-life patient cases,” she notes. The Hunimed experience is all about the learner supporting students from the enrollment process to their enrollment party.

Hunimed is also distinguished by its international outlook, with an emphasis on prioritizing the needs of the international community, which makes up 40% of the student body.

Hunimed has a one-to-one student-teacher ratio, while the small classroom ensures that students develop lasting connections with their classmates and faculty. Here the students are taught by experts.

Your host faculty includes internationally renowned researchers, while students learn from professors and medical professionals from around the world. The program concludes with a degree that enables students to work as MD in the EU and abroad.

“I am inspired by the immense knowledge that every professor has and look forward to continuing to seek advice and adding something new to my pool of information,” says Watarkar.

Hunimed also works to optimize student success by making sure they get all the support they need. This involves pairing junior students with seniors through the mentoring program, supervised by the Office for Medical Education and the International Office.

The six year old MD in medicine and surgery is taught entirely in English and is geared towards international success. The degree helps students acquire the skills necessary to be successful in the clinical and research fields generally practiced and studied in Italy and elsewhere.

They have multidisciplinary teaching methods, including problem-based learning. Outside of the classroom, Hunimed is hosting a state-of-the-art Simulation center –– the first of its kind in Italy –– to support students in acquiring professional skills. An anatomy laboratory also helps students improve surgical techniques, master new technologies, and deepen their anatomical knowledge.

And the icing on the cake? The highest medical school was built next to the renowned Humanitas Research Hospital, which is known throughout Europe for its excellent standard of health and advanced research.

These rooms make a significant contribution to the development of excellent medical professionals who are fit for practice. And Hunimed has the awards to prove it. The medical faculty recently received an Aspire-to-Excellence Award for excellence in medical simulation.

While many medical courses offer practical skills later in their studies, the MD in medicine and surgery emphasizes their importance right from the start. The students begin their journey with various theoretical interdisciplinary modules that are peppered with practical experience and simulation activities. The legal clerkship begins in the third year.

“At Humanitas Hospital, I went to operating rooms to see some operations,” explains Watarkar. “I learned that it is important to apply theoretical knowledge in actual clinical and surgical scenarios. Another important aspect was the ability to speak directly to patients during the history and physical examination to make a hypothetical diagnosis. “

With these findings, Watakar, who is scheduled to graduate in 2023, has big plans for her future. She plans to complete specialist training in the UK before setting up a private practice. The pandemic also taught her the importance of a good public health system, along with strategies to control infection and other diseases at the community level.

“People should be made aware of such diseases, and as future doctors we can focus on prevention rather than cure,” she says. With her Hunimed degree, she hopes to one day work with the World Health Organization to implement change on a global scale.

Budding medical students are encouraged to note that applying to Hunimeds MD in Medicine and Surgery is far from complicated. The HUMAT entrance test was developed in collaboration with experts from the University of Cambridge, Imperial College, the University of Oxford Medical School and Leeds Medical School for trade fair appearances.

It aims to identify talented students with strong skills in scientific thinking, critical thinking, and solid academic education – regardless of their educational background. To take it, students need to register online, enter their country of residence and select a slot. The next exam is planned for February 2022. To sign in, Click here.
