RIO DE JANEIRO
The top seed Matteo Berrettini from Italy beat the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro 6: 4, 6: 7 (6), 6: 3 on Friday and reached the quarterfinals of the rain-plagued Rio Open clay court tournament.
However, the game, originally scheduled for Thursday night, ended just minutes before Saturday’s start in Rio de Janeiro.
“I had two match points in the second set, but Thiago was strong,” said sixth-placed Berrettini, recalling a moment in the match that lasted seven hours before he was able to play the final points. “Here I am just before midnight, playing. You have to be mentally strong.”
Berrettini’s opponent will be Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Argentina’s Federico Delbonis 6-4, 7-6 (1) after several stoppages in the rain.
Rain forced the organizers to postpone all quarterfinal matches to Saturday. In addition to the clash between Berrettini and Alcaraz, Argentinian Diego Schwartzman meets Spaniard Pablo Andujar, Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic meets Argentine Francisco Cerundolo and Italian Fabio Fognini meets Argentine Federico Coria.
