Live rent-free in Italy for a year with the new Airbnb program

Running away to live in a beautiful Italian village may feel like an impossible pipe dream, but Airbnb makes it that little bit more achievable for one lucky person.

The home-sharing platform is looking for someone to live rent-free in a restored three-storey town house in Sicily for a whole year.

The Italian heritage is in the rural town of Sambuca with a population of 6,000.

The hilltop community on the west side of the Italian island has made headlines in recent years for being part of Italy’s famous €1 housing scheme.

However, Airbnb is not looking for someone who just wants to hide away in a rural idyll – the successful candidate is expected to actively contribute to the community.

“With the newfound flexibility of living and working remotely, a person is given the opportunity to relocate to Sicily with their family, partner or friend and move into this uniquely restored home,” according to the brand.

“Ideal candidates should be committed to being hosts and contributing to village life.

“Your stay in Sambuca will be for a period of one year starting June 30, with the successful applicant retaining all income from the Airbnb accommodation.”

Because it’s an Airbnb initiative, the chosen candidate will need to host guests in a guest room for most of their stay — though they’ll be able to keep the money off bookings.

“The host will welcome Airbnb guests from around the world to the €1 house for at least nine months of their year,” the website reads.

They also have the opportunity to improve their skills while residing in Sambuca by offering Italian language and cooking classes.

Unlike other homes in the official €1 Home Scheme, which are generally in need of a major refurbishment, the Airbnb property has already been fully refurbished, courtesy of architects Studio Didea.

“The spacious building is spread over three floors and offers plenty of space for working remotely and hosting on Airbnb,” the website reads.

“The ground floor consists of a small living room, a master bedroom with a king size bed and an ensuite bathroom.

“The first floor includes a living room, a kitchen, a study area, a bathroom and a mezzanine bedroom with a king-size bed.

“Upstairs includes an additional living area with a queen sleeper sofa.”

Although applicants can bring family or friends, stays are limited to a maximum of two adults and two children.

Candidates should be over the age of 18 and be able to speak English, with Italian being an added bonus.
