Be part of history and ride the country’s only active passenger carrying a Swift Boat. Feel the power of twin-cylinder, 2-stroke Detroit diesels as you take a 75-minute behind-the-scenes tour of San Diego’s military history.
The tour route goes under the Coronado Bay Bridge, the Naval Base San Diego and then the Naval Amphibious Base. Then head back to the aircraft carrier basin and North Island Naval Air Station before returning to the museum and ending with a high-speed cruise to feel the unique power of the Swift Boat.
Memorial Day 2014 started first. This is a narrated tour that details the role of PCF 816 in the US, Malta, Vietnam, Swift Boat sailors and the above facilities in the bay.
PCF 816 (Patrol Craft Fast) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and California Historical Resources.
The Swift Boat Sailors Association brought the PCF 816 Swift Boat to the San Diego Maritime Museum for restoration and operation in San Diego Bay.
Unique to this experience are the retired Swift Boat Sailors and Lecturers, who talk about what it was like to be a crew member in Vietnam and serve as Quartermaster, Gunner’s Mate, Engineer, Radarman, Boatswain’s Mate or Skipper.
This museum continues the Naval History Bay Tour aboard the PCF 816 Swift Boat Memorial Day weekend and only offers it on weekends at 12:15 PM and 2:15 PM
