READING, Pennsylvania – Penske Logistics announced last week that it had received Cold Carrier Certification, the first certification of its kind focused on excellence in refrigerated transportation from the Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA), a trade association for the cold chain industry to expand the industry and manage the cold chain.
Cold Carrier Certification recognizes refrigerated transport companies that adhere to the GCCA Best Practices Guide for Refrigerated Transport. This guide was published to help companies implement the US Food and Drug Administration’s requirement for the hygienic transportation of human and pet food (STF) under the US Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA). Although it is a US-based standard, GCCA considers the best practices outlined in its guide to be applicable worldwide.
“We are committed to introducing the highest levels of hygiene and the safe transport of perishable products in our fleet,” said Jeff Jackson, senior vice president, Operations – Dedicated Contract Carrier. “This certification underscores our commitment and provides our customers with an extra level of trust and documentation that we are doing our best to ensure the safety and hygiene of their perishable shipments.” Penske Logistics is a leading provider of special contract transports, including refrigerated transport in the food and beverage sector. Customers include convenience stores, grocers, wholesalers and distributors as well as fast food chains. The company’s fleet of more than 2,000 refrigerated vehicles handles more than 1.5 million cold chain truck shipments annually. Similarly, Penske Logistics also manages millions of square feet of cold storage for leading grocers in North America.
GCCA President Matthew Ott, CAE, CMP, said, “I applaud Penske’s commitment to food safety, as demonstrated by its Certified Refrigeration Carrier certification. Together we can all work to create a universally strong cold chain in which every product retains quality and safety through every link. “
GCCA consists of its core partners, including the International Association of Refrigerated Warehouses (IARW), the World Food Logistics Organization (WFLO), the International Refrigerated Transportation Association (IRTA) and the Controlled Environment Building Association (CEBA) and represents all major industries with temperature-controlled logistics. GCCA unites all partners to be the innovation leader in the temperature-controlled product industry. More information is available at www.gcca.org.
